If your house was built before 1980 chances are it could have asbestos containing building materials. Asbestos can be found in many common building materials including:
- Vinyl floor tiles
- Attic insulation
- Some linoleum
- Roofing materials
- Window caulking and glazing
- HVAC duct insulation
- Fiber cement siding
- Some forms of paint
If you suspect you have asbestos the best thing to do is to leave it alone. Asbestos containing materials in good shape do not pose any immediate danger. Do not attempt any removal or testing on your own.
Asbestos fibers are so small, and the materials look so similar to non-asbestos containing materials, that it is impossible to determine if a material has asbestos by visual means alone. You can always assume a material contains asbestos. The only way to prove that it does not contain asbestos is to have any questionable materials sampled by a certified asbestos inspector.
