Police bust meth lab next to elementary school

Local police serving a search warrant at a house next to R.B. Hunt Elementary school were surprised to find an entire operational meth lab with people cooking up the substance even as they entered.

“We thought they were using drugs,” said City of St. Augustine Police Department Sgt. Patrick McCauley. Instead, two of the five in the house at the time were “actively making, cooking methamphetamine.”

The dangerous process called for police to block off the area around the house and for firefighters to decontaminate it.

It did not close down the school, just a few feet away, or the Alligator Farm, just across the road.

R. B. Hunt principal Don Steele said no special provisions had to be made for the school’s 700 students.

“We’ve gotten some calls (from parents) but we were assured well before school that everyone was safe,” he said.
